Introduction

Corrosion is one of the most economically significant challenges facing operators in the UAE's industrial, offshore, marine, and infrastructure sectors. Salt-laden coastal air, high humidity, UV irradiance, extreme temperatures, and the chemical exposure inherent in oil and gas, petrochemical, and heavy industrial operations combine to create one of the most corrosion-aggressive environments in the world.

Corrosion damage on industrial assets typically initiates at surfaces where protective coatings are absent, thin, or compromised — at welds, cut edges, threaded connections, fastener interfaces, and complex geometries that conventional coatings cannot reach uniformly. Water pooling at these interfaces introduces electrolytes and accelerates both general and galvanic corrosion, particularly where dissimilar metals are in contact.

There is a clear and commercially significant need for a protective coating technology that can be easily applied over existing surfaces, maintain full hydrophobic and barrier performance under abrasive and chemically demanding conditions, and provide meaningful additional corrosion protection across the actual failure points — not just flat, accessible areas. This need was the starting point for the Gentoo Coating testing programme.
