Hydrophobicity & Transparency
The hydrophobic properties of Gentoo Coating are central to its corrosion protection performance. When water, salt spray, brine, or other corrosive fluids are unable to dwell on a metal surface — beading and shedding instead — the time available for electrochemical corrosion reactions is dramatically reduced. This is the mechanism by which Gentoo provides meaningful additional corrosion protection across the entire coated area, including at welds, edges, and fastener interfaces where conventional coatings are most vulnerable.
Hydrophobicity & Water-Shedding Performance
Gentoo has demonstrated an exceptional and durable ability to shed water and a wide range of industrial fluids. The hydrophobic performance is characterised through two key measurements: contact angle and watershed angle.
Contact Angle
Contact angle measures how water interacts with a surface. A high contact angle indicates strong hydrophobicity — water droplets remain spherical and do not spread or wet the surface. Untreated metals such as steel and aluminium exhibit contact angles of 60–65°, meaning water spreads readily and dwells on the surface. Gentoo achieves contact angles of 110°–117° across multiple substrate types, indicating exceptional hydrophobicity and minimal water-surface contact.
Watershed Angle
Watershed angle measures the minimum inclination at which a water droplet will roll off a surface rather than remaining stationary. A low watershed angle means that even a very slight angle of inclination is sufficient to shed water — leaving little to no moisture trail behind. Untreated steel and aluminium require angles exceeding 45° before water begins to move. Gentoo achieves watershed angles of approximately 3°–11° (depending on drop size), meaning water sheds readily from nearly horizontal surfaces, leaving virtually no moisture residue.

Key Findings
- Water beads and sheds from all substrates: On every substrate tested, Gentoo Coating achieved contact angles exceeding 110° — outperforming conventional polyurethane topcoats, uncoated metals, and other hydrophobic benchmark coatings.
- Near-zero watershed angle: Gentoo leaves little to no moisture trail on treated surfaces. In practice, this means salt-laden moisture and corrosive fluids shed from Gentoo-treated equipment under gravity alone — without requiring pressure washing or mechanical cleaning to remove pooled water.
- No impact on transparency: Gentoo does not affect the optical clarity of underlying surfaces. Haze was measured at negligible levels and the coating retains 100% transparency — consistent with its use on equipment where safety markings, load ratings, and identification labels must remain visible.
