Ultraviolet radiation is one of the most aggressive environmental factors degrading protective coatings in the UAE. Gentoo Coating's UV resistance was assessed using two industry-standard accelerated weathering test methods: ASTM D4329 and ASTM G154. Testing evaluated the impact of extended UV exposure on hydrophobicity, transparency, haze, clarity, colour stability, and gloss.

Test Method 1 — ASTM D4329 (QUV-B Lamp, 4-Week Cycle)

UV resistance was determined using a QUV accelerated weathering chamber fitted with a UVB-313 lamp at 0.63 W/m² irradiance. The test cycle comprised 7 hours of UV exposure at 50°C followed by a 5-hour condensation stage at 50°C with 100% relative humidity. The full cycle was repeated continuously for 4 weeks.

Visually, QUV exposure produced no evidence of degradation, delamination, or discolouration in the Gentoo film. Quantitative measurements confirmed the following:

Test Method 2 — ASTM G154 Cycle 2 (QUV-B, 500 Hours)

UV resistance applied over a MIL-PRF-85285E Type I Class H white gloss urethane topcoat was evaluated using ASTM G-154 Cycle 2. A UVB-313 lamp at 0.71 W/m² irradiance was used. The test cycle comprised 4 hours of UV at 60°C followed by 4 hours of condensation at 50°C with 100% relative humidity.

Following 500 hours of exposure, no significant change in CIE colour properties was observed with the addition of Gentoo. Critically, Gentoo exhibited significantly less gloss change than the underlying MIL-PRF-85285E urethane topcoat alone — indicating that Gentoo actually supports the long-term gloss retention of the paint system it is applied over.

  • Gentoo protects underlying paint from gloss loss: The dramatic reduction in gloss change (–1.1 with Gentoo vs. –8.9 for the control) over 500 hours of UV/condensation exposure confirms that Gentoo acts as a UV shield for the underlying coating — significantly extending the visual life of painted surfaces on UAE outdoor equipment and infrastructure.

For outdoor applications in the UAE — offshore platform surfaces, port cranes, structural steel on coastal infrastructure, rooftop HVAC equipment, construction plant, and solar farm enclosures — UV resistance is a primary durability driver. Gentoo's demonstrated stability under accelerated UV/condensation testing, and its measurable protective effect on underlying paint gloss, confirms it is appropriate for outdoor use in the UAE's high-UV coastal environment.
